Alex Atala(click to

of
Paul Bocuse
(RIP) and Giorgio
Locatelli, I thought...why
not keep serving them up?
Over
the past nineteen years I've been
booked to draw at some 2500 social occasions (!). I
attend
corporate events,
weddings and
all kinds of parties, giving away lots and lots of
on-the-spot "lightning sketches" - absolutely free!
It's impossible
to foretell what gigs will
be like - they're never boring, and in fact some can be
quite surreal! I'm
fortunate to have the opportunity to
foster a sense of creative fun
in the good company of some genuinely admirable
people who are at their best and eager to enjoy
themselves, in all kinds of weird & wondrous
settings.
Guests
immediately cotton on to what I'm doing and get
involved - as
subjects, sardonic commentators, and as giggling spectators of the eye-popping likenesses
that take shape in nothing flat - and then with a
few wisecrack-assisted flourishes of the pen, are handed unique
memories
of your event - which they themselves played a part increating!
"That's the
best cara...caraciktcha I've ever
had! Out of all the caracikitchas I've ever
ever had!" A beaming
Jamie Redknapp,
Wentworth Golf Club
From my London HQ's
nerve centre, I've
zigzagged to & from special events all across
Old
Blighty (yes including
Berkshire!)
professionally since 1999 ~ I'm no
stranger to county-to-county trekking. As Southern
Rail groan over their blown Tannoys®
- "It's a tough
job, but somebody's got
to do it!"

Mix'n'mingling,
table-hopping over dinners (not literally) or
working seated from one spot, all I need is pen,
paper and a smile (I can work with fake).
"Not bad! You should
think about doing it for a living!!"

Guests love giving their verdicts on my
cartoon
portraits (I don't mind! *he says*),
congratulating each other whenthey've come out well, or joyously ribbing
one-another over who looks peculiar, which
makes forgiggly,
ad-libbed repartee, and in a funny old way
really brings people together.

"Everyone
loved your "works of art". We were really impressed with the
jaw-dropping likenesses, long after you'd gone they were making the rounds to howls of laughter.
Hilarious!"
Geoff & Lucy,
Brighton
"Thanks for last night
Alfie, Kim was touched to be given
such a great memento of her ten years
with the team at Hilton. Everyone had
fun & thought it was a brilliant
idea."

(about a leaving gift done for her colleagues at
their local bar)
Most of my
caricatures are of "singletons", but
naturally sometimes couples & groups wish to be immortalised together. As long as I
can be sure of not getting too tied up with one set of guests I'm
glad to
oblige.
If you like I can preprint graphics and/or
a message of your choice onto
each sheet of
paper I use ~ to mark the occasion, distinguish a brand, convey the
ethos of a campaign, or simply to add a stylish personal touch.
I draw on
super-heavy A4 laser paper, and present each and
every
caricature inside a free clear splash-proof
top'n'side-opening plastic document folder,
which gets rolled up and
rubberbanded.
"Give
her a body like Baywatch ~ and a face like Crimewatch!!"

(heartily bellowed at me from the other end
of the room by a fellow at a Warburtons Bakery event)
I'm
there to please, not to punish! With some people, whatever I draw the real thing is always
funnier! In all sreiousness though,
the
truth is by nature I favour ladies,
capturing genuine likenesses
that are fun, but often quite kind.
It's the gentlemen who
happily
supply me with comedy raw material, simply by
being naturally amusing.
"What
is it he does again?"

Sketchum's mum
Making
use of pinpoint accuracy to establish the
relative proportions, then only as much broad-brush
exaggeration as is needed for emphasis or
effect, my caricatures skip
a not-so-fine line between realism & farce.
Picking up on and highlighting those unique fleeting
facial expressions that are characteristic of a
person, I create
likenesses
so fantastically convincing they look
more like you than you!!
~ My
"live" caricatures suit any occasion (although
I've not worked at a séance -
yet...) ~ Here are the three types of event that I sketch at the
most: ~
I
attend more weddings than anything else. I brighten the mood and provide
personalised
favours/keepsakes, by adapting to your
reception - be it by mix'n'mingling during
drinks,winding my
way around and entertaining the wedding breakfast tables, and when things become more of a party
I'm very much in demand.
"Even superb wedding photographs
can’t capture the sides to you that Mr Sketchum's
caricatures do!"
~ Me
"Hi
Alfie
~
Me
and
Al
can't
thank
you
enough!
You
are
brilliant
and
your
sketches
are
Hilare!
Every
single
guest
loved
your
work
and
thanks
too
for
squeezing
my
two
little
pest
sisters
in
at the end!
Thanks
again
so
much

Big
parties mean I can methodically "work the room" and
get a general buzz going. Smaller gatherings are
a treat, as they're good-natured affairs where
I'm amongst family, friends and colleagues
who'll get on famously anyway, but with a
felt-tip-squeezer
like me there doing eye-pleasers, they have a
riot!
Business people love to
let off steam efficiently and productively. As
well as adding a very human touch to organised
events with - the best ice-breaker of all -
laughter, I supply talking points, personalised freebies
(branded if that's useful) and
function as a marketing tool
by helping clients create events which
simultaneously entertain, generate awareness of
their services, and reflect well on their
organisations.
I
took my first booking
to sketch at a
madcap
charidee
"Bachelor
and Spinster Ball"
whilst still studying at
Chelsea College
of Art.
Thanks to the
outré mêlée
of carousing Débs
and their potted Delights
sketching
amid the chaos wasn't boring
and soon, *ahem*, my magnetic personality rose
to the fore.
Now,
with eighteen years' full-time experience
as a "live" (on-the-spot/not dead yet)
caricature artist for hire,
delightfully wicked sketches, and an incredibly
pleasant, modest personality, I've achieved total mastery at the fine Art
of...getting out of the way of waiters!
"Find a job you love and you'll never have to
work again."
